Twitter queen Chrissy Teigen has abdicated her throne, proving once again that she is better than the rest of us.
In a final series of tweets on Wednesday night, Teigen announced she would be leaving Twitter due to the negative impact the social media platform was having on her. Minutes later, her entire account had been deleted.
"For over 10 years, you guys have been my world," said Teigen in a now-deleted tweet thread. "I honestly owe so much to this world we have created here. I truly consider so many of you my actual friends.
"But it’s time for me to say goodbye. This no longer serves me as positively as it serves me negatively, and I think that’s the right time to call something."
SEE ALSO: Chrissy Teigen, queen of Twitter, has got women embracing their grey hairTeigen had been a prolific poster and prominent personality on Twitter for years, with nearly 14 million followers at the time of her deactivation. The model and entrepreneur was even dubbed "Mayor of Twitter" by the company itself, an unofficial title she happily and repeatedly embraced.
Unfortunately, not even the enthusiastic admiration of Twitter itself protected Teigen from the platform's more toxic elements. Harassment, bullying, and abuse have long been a problem on the social media platform. Now it seems that Twitter's inability to effectively address the issue has cost it its one of its most beloved unofficial ambassadors.
"My life goal is to make people happy. The pain I feel when I don’t is too much for me. I’ve always been portrayed as the strong clap back girl but I’m just not," wrote Teigen.
"My desire to be liked and fear of pissing people off has made me somebody you didn’t sign up for, and a different human than I started out here as! Live well, tweeters. Please know all I ever cared about was you!!!"
This isn't the first time Teigen has stepped back from Twitter. She previously took a break from the platform in May last year, after she responded to negative comments about her by food columnist Alison Roman and was subsequently attacked by the Twitter mob.
However, the complete deletion of her account would indicate that this exit is much more permanent.
UPDATE: March 25, 2021, 1:12 p.m. EDT On Thursday afternoon, Teigen released the following statement on Instagram about leaving Twitter.
It’s true! The platform no longer serves me as positively as it does negatively, so with that I bid you adieu. But I want to say that this is absolutely NOT twitter’s fault - I believe they do all they can to combat relentless bullying, any honestly, it’s not the bullying!! You guys have no idea how much they’ve reached out and worked with my team and me personally. It’s not the platform. It’s not the “bullying”. And it’s not the trolls. The trolls I can deal with, although it weighs on you. It’s just me. I have to come to terms with the fact some people aren’t gonna like me. I hate letting people down or upsetting people and I feel like I just did it over and over and over. Someone can’t read that they disappointed you in some way every single day, all day without physically absorbing that energy. I can feel it in my bones. And to the Q anon people who think I’m in Guantanamo Bay right now, lol. I saw “Q: into the storm” and saw what I’m working with here. And I, lol, I no longer care. Don’t flatter yourselves.
